A New Path Forward

First Nations clan members from across the Roper River catchment gathered to discuss the future of their water. They established the Ropa Woda Governance Council and issued a historic declaration to protect the lifeblood of the Territory.

Indigenous Leadership

Establishing the Council to ensure Traditional Owners have a formal, decision-making role in how the river is managed.

Total Protection

Calling for a complete ban on all future water extraction licenses in the Roper catchment to save the river from over-extraction.

Cultural Law

Demanding legal protection for environmental and Indigenous cultural values that have sustained the river for millennia.

The Declaration Calls For:

Federal Funding & Support To officially establish the “Ropa Woda Governance Council: Living Spirit, Living Water”.
A Complete Ban on New Extraction An immediate halt to all future water extraction licenses in the Roper catchment.
Genuine Decision Making Inclusion of the new Ropa Woda Governance Council in ALL water decision-making processes.
Legal Protection Enforceable laws that protect the environmental and Indigenous cultural values of the river system.
